We check the things that separate a designer from a diagram-drawer: whether they reason about blast radius and IAM least-privilege instead of hand-waving "we'll lock it down later," whether they can read a bill and cut it without breaking SLAs, and whether they've actually run the thing they designed in production and watched it fail. Certifications are a signal we verify, not a substitute for the screen — a candidate who holds the cert but can't defend a subnet decision does not pass.
We also match to your stack and constraints before we send anyone. An architect who is deep on Azure enterprise landing zones is not the same hire as one who has spent five years in AWS serverless, and we won't pretend they are to fill a req faster.
On AWS, we look for real depth in the Well-Architected Framework, VPC and Transit Gateway networking, IAM and Organizations/Control Tower for multi-account governance, and the core compute and data services (EC2, ECS/EKS, Lambda, RDS, DynamoDB, S3). Relevant certifications are the AWS Solutions Architect Professional and, for platform-heavy roles, DevOps Engineer Professional — verified, not just claimed.
On Azure, the equivalent depth is the Cloud Adoption Framework and enterprise-scale landing zones, hub-and-spoke networking, Entra ID and RBAC, and the core services (VMs, AKS, App Service, Azure SQL, Cosmos DB). The certifications worth weighting are Azure Solutions Architect Expert (AZ-305) and the AZ-104 administrator foundation beneath it.
For most modern architecture roles, infrastructure-as-code is non-negotiable — we screen for hands-on Terraform (and often CloudFormation, Bicep, or ARM), plus enough CI/CD, containerization, and observability fluency (Kubernetes, Datadog/CloudWatch, cost tooling) that the architect can hand engineering a design that is actually buildable. If your role leans toward security, compliance, or a specific vertical, tell us and we screen for that explicitly rather than sending a generalist.
Contract is the fastest path when you have a defined project — a migration, a landing-zone build, a re-architecture — with a clear start and end. Contract-to-hire lets you work with an architect on a real engagement before committing to a full-time offer, which lowers the risk on a senior hire that is expensive to get wrong. Direct hire is for when you already know you want the role permanently and want us to run the search and the technical vetting.
